Chew on this...

Please post a reflection on your first week of Montessori ESY 2009. What was the most interesting thing you've learned? What did you like? What didn't you like? Has what you've learned so far affected your eating habits? How so? Have you spoken to people outside the program about what you're learning? If so, how did they respond? What do you think? Give us something to chew on...

  1. The most interesting thing i have learned so far was that lemons have alot of bacteria on it and it is one of the dirtiest things in the resturant besides the ice and kitchen. i really enjoyed the cooking and making smoothies. what i least enjoyed was the math and fractions. waching the videos about the meat and how it is killed etc made me think twice about eating fastfood. ive spoken out to people about KFC and how they treat there chickens. they were shock and disguted. i think KFC treats there chickens horrible and needs to make a change!

  3. The things I found most interesting to have learned during the Montessori Extended School year was the articles we read about what we're eating and where it comes from.I also enjoyed the cooking aspect of the science clas that was the most fun because kids like hands on work and it makes it easier to understand wats going on and wat we're learning.I didnt really like the math class maybe its just me because i hate math but it was deffinitly easier and more hands on than during the regular school year. What i have learned about the food i have been eating in the past has changed my eating habits drastically i havent eatin any Mcdonalds or and fast food for that matter,i have been making more smoothies and homemade meals with fresh veggies.I have also encouraged my family to go more green nd start eating more veggies and fruit.

  4. The things i found most intersting to have learned during the Montessori Extended School Year was the films we were watching about where food comes from and why not to overcook your food. Well your not supposed to over cook your food because the cell walls in the vegetables that contain flavor will burtst open which will release the flavor and make the food mushy and tasteless and i'm pretty sure nobody wants to eat food that has no taste. Fastfood nation was a good movie because it showed how the cows were smushed together in the farm waiting to be slaughtered and made into meat which is wrong becuase the cows and cattle have lives that they need to live as well as any human being in this world so for them to be caught and sent of to these places that unskilled workers who have no experience at all work at, and these people don't even know how to clean the cows out properly because if they did their wouldn't be cases of stuff being in the meat that we eat everyday. The kfc video we saw was disturbing because i don't understand why anybody would hurt these nice and sweet animals like that i mean come on now i know that they must of been mistreated as a kid but to take out on a animal like a chicken that can't hurt nobody including a fly is very wrong and should be stopped. How would like it if somebody came into your house and started throwing your head against the wall and stepping on you, that would be messed up. So there is only one question that we have to ask ourselves, When will we try and do something to help stop this cruelty to animals??. I haven't had any beef lately, and im just happy im learning how to cook because that can vital in the future when we get sent out on our own in the real world. I'm getting ready to make a smoothie right now instead of drinking a soda.

  5. The thing that I found most interesting was how flavor is a combination of you sense of smell and your sense of taste. I never knew that before. The things I've like the most was cooking and going to the farm last Friday. One thing I didn't like that much was the fractions in math. My eating habits have changed for the better because I've stopped eating that much fast food. I really haven't spoke out to anyone about what I've learned but I plan to. The program so far has been a really good experience.

  6. Summer School 2009 was better than i thought it would be. I thought summer school was all about lots of hw and long days in a boring classroom. But i came to find out that we were cooking. I learned alot so far about the foods that i was easting. for example MCDonalds can kill you. I thought it was just a high calorie snack that i can just burn off by working out, but that wasnt th case. I also learned where my food is made and also how. Seeing this makes me almost want to change my diet. I love to eat. Doesnt matter what it is. But i also workout. So what ever i put on i can take off. But i am eating more greens and fruits to fill me up for a long time. Its better than wasting money on a cheeseburger and fries anyways.

  7. The things i found interesting in summer schoo 2009 was finding out we were going to be cooking. Whoever thought that i could earn 4credits by cooking. I like that we are reading articles and watching videos to show and tell us about how unhealthy/healthy our foods are. Also where and how they are made. the teachers made it fun by not just teaching normal classes. They actualy incorporated cooking into the lessons to help with the recipe. And i hate math, so to actaully pay attention thats pretty cool. My diet has not really changed. And thats a good thing becasue i do not eat fast food everyday but even so since i workout, i can take off the calories i put on in the same day. I eat more fruits and greens now to full me up so i wont have to buy the cheap and unhealthy stuff at fast food joints

I have learned many new things in esy. I learned that 1 out of every 4 person walks into a fast food resturant. Also that America is the fattest country in the world. I like how we get to make healthy food and that we can do it at home by ourselves. My eating habbits have change just a bit. I dont eat meat as much. I never ate beef that much before and not planning to after whats in it! I have told my mom about what we made in science. Now she wants me to make her food. I made myself a smoothie, it was pretty good. Its better then the sugary sodas I drank before. I want to learn how to make more food in the coming week.

  9. What i have learned so far about eating habits of americans, an about the food industry has helped me form an educated opinion on the situation an make me feel lik we should take an active step to reform the food industry's policys on the quality of the food that we eat both before an after it is killed. the first week has helped me to several problems on both sides of the fastfood/slowfood argument an while it hasnt convinced me that slow food is necessarily the way to go it has made think that if we are going to stay as fast food reliant as we are in this country we should take steps to change the status quo of what is exceptable in this industry

  10. I really like cooking so i'm happy happy we are cooking in the summer program. i have learned how the animals we eat are treated and what they do to them. the one thign i really enjoyed was making smoothies. I enjoy reading the articles and watching the movies on how and where our food comes from.I use to eat from outside almost everyday but not anymore. After i found out what they do to it i think its nasty. I talked to my dad and told him what we are learning in summer school and told him when our food comes from and how they are treated. His reaction was you just noticed? why do you think i didn't let you eat from outside everyday? i was like oh i knew that. They should treat the animals good and should not do anything bad to our food like spitting on it. They should be cleaner then they are.

  11. Contrary to popular belief i have enjoyed extended school year. i have learned more about what i am eating and where my food is coming from. Fast food that i and and other americans continue to consume isn't good at all. Also i am a better cook than i gave myself credit for. We learned to make soup smoothies and hopefully other things. I am abetter speaker after the tips given in advisory

  12. I enjoyed maing smoothies and soup. I learned where my food comes from and how it is made. It kind of effected my eating habit but I still eat it but i first think how it was made and what they do to it. I talked to my friends about how our food is made at fast food places and they all think it's nasty. The food industry should go check how our food is made and they should close some fast food places until they clean it. By closing some fast food palces the other ones would be aware and clean theres too.

I've learned a lot about fast food and where it comes before before its a burger at McDonalds or some other form of meat at a local fast food restaurant. I've also learned a lot about how to be healthy and smart when it comes to eating different types of food. The most interesting thing to me is how dirty some restaurants can actually be. It disgusts me to know that I can be digesting tons of germs and fecal matter! Where's a health inspector when you need one? I love fast food , but I'm going to be a little bit more careful about the foods I eat.

  17. I find that the Montessori ESY 2009 is a fun experience rather then a boring one. The teachers make it very interesting so that the students actually put a effort into working. In the week that I have been in the ESY i have learned alot about the food i eat and where it comes from. The one thing that i dislike about the extended school year is how we are being graded every hour or so, we should get a overall grade for the whole day rather then us getting graded diffenly every time we switch into a different classroom.

  18. The things i found most intersting to have learned during the Montessori Extended School Year was the information we obtained when wathcing, the films, reading various articles and learning about the food industry. I have learned the truth behind the delicious fast food burgers we consume. The tasty burgers we have been eating have actually been infected meat mixed with chemicals. The knowledge I have obtaine during this past week helps me spready awareness of the food we eat so, that change may occur in the fast food industry.

  19. I think that this week was very cool becuase we did cooking and we learned about the science of food. I ve.known how fast food make you fat what not but after seeing what saw I don't want to eat it again. People don't really eat vegetables and fruit but now I really see how it's good for your body and how it will keep you heathy.

  20. During this first week of Montessori Summer School I learned many interesting things. I learned where my food comes from and just exactly how it is handled. I liked one fact that we learned so much just in a short period of time. I did not like the fat that chickens are being abused so badly befored being killed. Due to all this information i learned, when I'm ordering Chinese food or go to McDonald's I'll tend to think twice before I eat it but then I end up eating it anyway. The class took a field trip to a farm and learned where our food is grown and I liked when we went on a hayride. We learned there is a farm in Queens which is the only farm left in Queens.

  22. Summer school for me has opened my eyes to a lot of food i eat. My mom has been talking to me about loosing weight and changing my eating habits so she was happy that this was going to help me start. I've learned that there is feces in my burgers =[. Even though i didn't like McDonald's i still ate it cause i was out and hungry, but now i realize instead of giving in to eating it i can suggest other places to eat when out with friends but times are hard so i gotta stay on budget (hehe). I really like this experience because i get to learn more ways of cooking even though i already knew how 2 cook =D. I get to expand on the food i cook and learn about the different herbs and spices (a lot i already knew =D).I love working with all the teachers and them teaching us about the food we eat and our diets (Miss. Vogel =D). This took up 2 weeks of my summer but I am glad i had a chance to work with them and learn from them.

  23. I think this week has been really joyful because we did a alot of fun stuff! Like cooking the sauce was really fun because it tought me to use different ingredients towards cooking. I think the best part for me in summer school is the cooking definetly... The math and english is fun and all but the cooking is way better, since I cook at home, its easier.

  24. What I have learned during this week is that the
USA is the fattest country because all this country are doing is eating fastfood.I learned that the resturant bathroom are cleaner then the kicthen "NASTY" right.Reading the documents and article about the fastfood industry change the way i eat now.The best part about school is cooking and showing us how to make quick heathly meal so it dont be fast food all the time. i have been telling my sister what i i learned everyday and now she change her way of eating.I enjoy the summer program kinda like this better then school and i think we should have a Culinary Arts class in school...

  25. The most interesting thing I learned this week was about the way our meat is being processed. I never stopped and thought about all the sugars, sodium and fat I was putting in my body when eating a fast food meal. The thing I liked was that watching video after video I'd leave knowing that having a Quater Pounder isnt such a good idea. During this week I have increased my knowledge about healty eating habits which has encourage me to put that chinese food paper down and grab the Quaker Oats. I've spoken to my cousin about the meat industry and because of this, she's thinking about giving up fast food.

  26. The most interesting thing I've learned the first week was how to make pizza dough. I like the pizza dough because i like the way it came out. What i didn't like so much was the oat meal because oat meal is wack. yeah I would say what i have learn change my eatting habits. Because what I seen and heard i didn't like people throwing chickens around how can you treat your food like that. Yes I have been telling people what I have seen and heard. Some care some do not care when I tell people what i have seen it don't bother them. What I've seen bothers me but not to much i would say. Because people still going to eat even if they knew where it came from anyway.

The first week of summer school I think was very exciting. We learned about alot of things and it definitely changed the way I thought about fast food restaurants. This is one the most unique well organized summer school's I ever heard of. It keeps kids very engaged and it doesn't bore them at all. I like the trip to the farm it was very educational about the topic we were learning. The most interesting thing I learned so far was how to make pizza.

  31. This year's "extended school year"(summer school) was actually fun and enlightening at the same time. Every year seems to get a little bit more interesting. I appreciated learning different perspectives and aspects of our food and where it comes from even though I now know that what we ingest isn't exactlly as "tasty" as we think, inless we favor the taste of diseased cows and lame chickens. I'll have some oatmeal instead of that mcgriddle for breakfast next time(thanks saara). -Tiffany Hairston
